West Alabama Design Phase
The design phase for this project began in 2024 and is expected to be completed by this summer. Below is the current roadway cross-section, along with streetscape renderings of the project corridor:
This project will mirror the transformative updates already seen along neighboring corridors such as Westheimer Road, Kirby Drive, Bissonnet Street, Shepherd Drive, and Eastside Street.
Key Features of the Project Include:
Complete road surface replacement, while preserving the existing lane configuration. The entire road surface will be replaced to improve durability and traffic flow.
Upgraded Infrastructure- The project includes major drainage system improvements, replacement of aged water and sanitary lines, and the relocation of overhead electrical and telecommunications infrastructure into underground duct banks.
Improved Traffic and Pedestrian Experience
New traffic signals and roadway lighting will enhance safety, while the pedestrian environment will see significant visual upgrades. Wider sidewalks, decorative lighting, landscaping, and irrigation systems are all planned to promote walkability and aesthetic appeal.
Following completion, the Upper Kirby Management District will provide ongoing maintenance. Landscape crews will be deployed weekly to maintain plantings and irrigation. In addition, Upper Kirby crews will handle repairs or replacements of sidewalks, crosswalks, pedestrian lighting, and street furniture as needed.
